Sheridans’ charity football tournament raises almost £10k for Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy
The sun shone on the 16th annual Sheridans Football Tournament on Sunday (6th September 2009) which this year saw 13 teams from across the music and entertainment industries take part in this event at the Finsbury Leisure Centre near Old Street in London, where they competed for the coveted Cup and Plate awards to raise money for Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy.
The teams were as below with Deloitte winning the Cup, Sports Interactive as the Runners Up and Saffery Champness collecting the Plate trophy, leaving Sheridans in a respectable fourth place as Plate Runners Up.
Following the games, players and spectators all took part in an auction which included some fantastic lots including a signed Jamaican team t-shirt from the 2008 Olympics from the legendary three time Olympic Gold Medallist and world record holder, Usain ‘Lightning’ Bolt, signed football shirts from the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, West Ham and Liverpool, as well as various theatre tickets donated by Sheridans’ clients Andrew Lloyd Webber and Littlestar Limited, which altogether raised over £2,000.
Through the raffle and additional fundraising the event managed to raise a fantastic £9,786 which all goes directly to the charity and with money still coming in, organisers hope to push this past the £10k mark shortly.
Sheridans’ Head of Music, Theatre and Media and Tournament organiser, Russell Roberts, said:
"We are delighted to continue to support Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in their fantastic work. A big thank you to all those who attended and also helped make it a wonderful day, enabling us to increase the amount raised for the charity over the years to around £130,000."

About the charity, Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy:
Based in custom built premises in Kentish Town, north London, the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy charity aims to help a wide range of people with special needs. The therapy involves sessions between trained therapists and infants with physical and mental disabilities, psychologically disturbed adolescents and adults with severe learning difficulties, using music as an outlet and form of communication.
The use of these methods which are now being successfully used at centres across the UK and in America was evolved by Paul Nordoff, a US concert pianist and composer, and Clive Robbins, a British educationalist.
The benefits of music therapy are wide-ranging, and relate to the different reasons for which people come to receive music therapy. For those with communicative disorders it can enhance expressive and interactive ability; for people isolated by illness or disability it can provide a means of socialisation, sharing and community. Music therapy can also facilitate a process of self-exploration.
The Music Industry provides a great deal of invaluable financial assistance for Nordoff-Robbins, particularly by participating in annual fundraising events such as the Music Industry Trusts Awards and the Silver Clef Awards.
